A bad design is the retro theater. This is a bad design because it is very hard to read and understand what is going on. There is also no navigation, which makes it difficult to navigate to the other designs.
A good design is the Kyoto Forest. This is a good design because it's a simple design. The information is easily found by the user. I also like this design because it has left side navigation. I have a habit of looking to the left side for the navigation bar instead of the right.

I don't necessarily agree with your usage of "design" when referring to Retro Theater. I think the design is excellent- its the functionality and usability that are severely lacking.
Good prioritization of simplicity- it seems that more and more sites are moving to big text, big buttons, and simple palettes to make a point- and users are appreciative.
